Job Description

Job Summary

UX Designers at The Philadelphia Inquirer play a key role in shaping how our readers engage with our content across all platforms. They continuously evolve our digital products to meet the changing needs of both our audience and our organization.

As a UX Design Intern, you’ll work closely with our design, research, and engineering teams and contribute to real projects by conducting research, creating user flows or wireframes, building prototypes, and delivering final designs. Together, we’ll define a project you can complete in your time with us that allows you to make a tangible impact.

This is a 9-week, paid, full-time internship running from June through August 2026.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop an understanding of user needs and help shape how they interact with new features
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, journalists, and UX designers in a fast-paced environment to see your project or feature come to life
  • Create wireframes, user flows, prototypes and high-fidelity designs
  • Participate in design reviews, giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • Support user research efforts, including interviews, usability testing, and comparative analysis, and help translate insights into design solutions
  • Present your findings to key stakeholders to help inform decision-making based on your designs
  • Apply and maintain brand and design system standards to ensure consistency across platforms
  • Contribute to evolving The Inquirer’s design system and asset libraries
  • Follow accessibility best practices to make our products inclusive for everyone
  • Complete a final capstone project summarizing your experience and key takeaways

Who We’re Looking For

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college or university
  • Rising junior or senior, or a current graduate student, studying User Experience Design, or a related field or completed a UX/UI Boot Camp certification
  • Working proficiency in Figma (auto-layout, components, design systems, prototyping)
  • Familiarity with AI tools for design without a reliance on them
  • Basic understanding of UX principles, usability heuristics, and user-centered design methods
  • Strong visual design skills, including typography, layout, and interaction patterns
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills
  • Experience conducting or assisting with user research or willingness to learn (e.g., usability testing, comparative analysis)
  • A belief in the value of local journalism and a desire to support The Inquirer’s mission to be the indispensable source of local news and information serving the diverse communities of the Philadelphia region

Other Things To Know

  • To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume, along with your portfolio (either as a link or attachment) showcasing your UX process.
  • Email questions to Nancy Nguyen, People & Culture Generalist at NNguyen@inquirer.com
