Job Summary:

Painter:

A Application of paint and/or wall covering materials.

Apply latex, enamels, stains, varnishes and epoxy base paints to surfaces using brushes, rollers and spray equipment.

Install wallpaper, vinyl wall coverings, vinyl wall protection, borders, etc.

Operate and maintain spray equipment (airless, conventional cup gun, & HVLP) on daily basis when being used.

Apply Water-born products according to manufactures specifications.

Mix paints, stains, etc. using hand methods properly mix paints, stains, etc. to the appropriate color.

B Preparation of interior and exterior surfaces to receive subsequent coats of paint and/or wall covering materials.

Wash and clean surfaces such as walls, ceilings and trim, etc., using sponges and cleaning compounds.

Sand, scrape, and strip old finishes using hand sanding equipment and paint removers.

Patch and repair cracks, holes, and other surface defects using appropriate repair materials/compounds.

Apply paper or nylon tape to joints, cracks, seams, etc., with appropriate joint compounds. Apply cornerbead as needed.

Finish with successive number of coat of joint compound to produce desired finish, sanding in between coats as needed.

Apply required primers for the surface to be finished.

C. Maintenance of work area, equipment and tools.

Maintain work areas, to be free of construction debris, dust, etc.

Set-up, disassemble and maintain trade-related equipment and tools.

Maintain all painting tools and equipment on a daily basis, such as cleaning brushes, rollers, etc.

Work from swing stage, scaffolding, or ladders, making sure to perform safety checks when using this equipment

D. Assistance with health, safety and security at the Wisconsin Union.

Follow all safety procedures and attend required health, safety and security trainings. Complete and stay up to date on required safety trainings.

Communicate safety procedures and concerns to guests. Report needed equipment or building repairs. Report security violations and/or suspicious activity. Report building system malfunctions.

Maintain integrity of issued keys and equipment.

Report or take care of any hazardous situations immediately.

E. Performance of miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Provide Building and Grounds Supervisor with updated information on jobs in progress, work and back log.

Manage and prioritize work assignments including start and completion dates.

Must keep accurate, up to date records, to include but not limited to; time slips, service requests, materials used, forms/permits.

Order and stock all related materials as directed.

Demonstrate a commitment to the success of the Wisconsin Union.

Promote respect and practice civility in the workplace.

Provide effective customer service at all times.

Monday - Friday

7am - 3:30pm

Compensation:

This has been identified as a Crafts Worker position. Crafts Workers may elect an increased vacation allocation with a corresponding reeducation to the prevailing rate.

Hourly wage based on leave selected below.

100 hr leave-$41.75
140 hr leave-$41.08
180 hr leave-$40.44

Differential pay added for hours worked in scenarios below:

+$2.50 per hour differential, for hours worked between 6pm - 6am

+$ .80 per hour differential, for hours worked on Saturday and Sunday

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Gathers materials, prepares work area, and maintains equipment and supplies needed for jobs
  • Cleans work area upon completion of projects according to established guidelines and expectations
  • Prepares and levels dry wall
  • Interprets blueprints and drawings to assess and determine specifications and calculate the materials and equipment required. Discusses project plan with customer/client
  • Reviews finished projects with client/customer. Maintains records and reports of work status and completion according to established deadlines and expectations
  • Completes skilled painting work, color matching, and mixing according to established trade standards and applicable building and safety codes

Journeyman level certification or higher. Documentation of equivalent experience/apprenticeship is required.

Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Preferred: Completion of a Department of Workforce Development (DWD)-approved Painter apprenticeship (see dwd.wisconsin.gov/apprenticeship/trades/painter-n-decorator.htm).
  • Acceptable alternatives: formal journeyman recognition from an appropriate international/local trade organization or documented equivalent experience and informal training.
  • Minimum of 6,240 hours total in exterior and interior preparation and finishing, paper hanging, decorating, spraying/rigging.
  • At least 400 hours of related instruction, including safety procedures, and demonstrated care/use of tools and equipment.
  • Applicants without formal apprenticeship must submit documented proof of training/experience (e.g., letters from past employers/clients or similar verification).
